Tenant’s Right To Rent – EU Requirements Change

The rules on an EU tenant’s right to rent has recently changed, and as of June 30th 2021, all EU tenants will require extra documentation if they wish to continue renting in England.

What Are The Changes?

Previously, EU citizens were allowed to rent and live in England with just their passport. However, since leaving the EU, the rules have changed and EU tenants must present additional proof of immigration status via a range of methods.

These include a granted ‘Settled Status’, a current residence card, or an immigration visa.

How Tenants Can Prepare For This

Most EU citizens living in the UK will have already applied for a settled status before June 30th and will have received their documents. Those that did not can either present a current residence card or a physical immigration visa. Now, all tenants must make sure that they have this documentation and information ready for their initial application stage, in order for the checks to be successful and for right to rent to be granted.

What Does It Mean For Landlords?

Since these changes have been made, all Landlords must be sure that their tenants have a valid right to rent in England. Our external referencing company – Goodlord – will carry out these checks for you to make sure that the correct documentation is presented.

If they have any queries, they will then refer back to us, so that we can carry out in-person checks with the tenant. By using this effective system to inspect the necessary information, Anglo American ensure that both landlords and tenants are adhering to rules and can move through the process as smoothly as possible.
